Quartz is an engineered stone that has been very popular over the past several years. The reason for that is that it can give the appearance of natural stones while providing additional qualities. Here is a look at strengths and weaknesses of made to measure quartz worktops.
Advantages
Non-porous
Quartz has a non-porous surface which resists staining. Because of this quartz is also highly hygienic and suitable for use in both kitchens and bathrooms.
Low maintenance
Quartz worktops require the lowest level of maintenance out of all countertop materials, and this contributes to its non-porous surface. The cleaning is easy with just soap and water. It doesn’t need a seal, unlike other countertop materials.
Resistant to scratches
Quartz is naturally very hard material and it is therefore resistant to scratches.
Widest colour range
The manufacturing process of quartz allows a much wider range of colours than other materials have. In that process, manufacturers add pigments to change the colour of quartz. You can find in quartz’s range any colour you want, from classic options to very unusual colours.
Various styles and finishes
Quartz can be also manufactured to imitate marble or granite. It can have a solid colour or it can be with veining. You can choose from the matte or shiny finish. Quartz is very appreciative material because it can easily fit in any kitchen design.
Can be used for various purposes
Quartz can be used for kitchen worktops, bathroom vanity units, shower walls, floors…
Disadvantages
Lower resistance to heat
Quartz shouldn’t be exposed to very high temperatures. You should avoid putting away hot pots directly on the worktop and use mat or trivet underneath. It also shouldn’t be used over radiant heat.
Not recommended for outdoor use
Quartz is made of 93% natural quartz and 7% resin and pigments. Resin makes this product UV unstable which restricts it to indoor use only.
Chemical Sensibility
Highly acidic or alkaline household cleaners can damage the surface of the quartz countertop. Use water and mild detergent or soap for cleaning, instead.
Weight
Quartz is very heavy; some cabinets should be reinforced before the installation, especially the cabinet underneath the sink.
