Quartz is a manufactured stone, made of 93% natural quartz and 7% resin and pigments. The pigments are added to change its colour and make patterns- like veining, for example. Because of that, quartz can look like other stones, as well as like Statuario, famous Italian marble type. Statuario is recognized by the white field and bold grey or gold veining. Since Statuario marble is quarried in only one quarry in Italy, it can be pretty expensive. But now you can have the same appearance with quartz, at a lower cost.
Pros
- Beautiful
Statuario quartz is no different from marble- it is one of the most beautiful and recognizable stones. It will make your kitchen elegant and sophisticated. Also, it is very easy to combine with almost any colour of kitchen cabinets. - Quartz is highly stain resistant
Quartz has a non-porous surface that is extremely resistant to staining. Even the most persistent liquids, such as coffee or wine will not stand a chance against quartz. - It is very durable
Quartz is a very hard and resilient stone that will not break or crack under pressure. Because of its durability, it will last for decades without major traces of use. Some quartz brands offer a warranty that lasts up to 25 years. - Resistant to scratches
You can be sure that even cutting directly on quartz worktops will not get them scratched. Just beware that it can dull your knives. - Easy to clean and maintain
If you want a worktop that you can get installed and completely forget about it, quartz can give that to you. Quartz worktops are very easy to clean with just water and soap required. It doesn’t need sealing, unlike other stones. - Can be used for other purposes
Quartz can be used not only for kitchen worktops but also for floors and backsplashes. You can use Statuario for the countertops to add accent and simple white tiles for the floors.
Cons
- Sensitive to chemicals
Avoid cleaners that contain bleach and ammonia, as they can damage quartz’s surface. If such cleaners accidentally come in contact with your worktops, neutralize their effect with water. - UV sensitive
One of quartz’s components is resin, which is UV unstable. If your worktops are too much exposed to sun rays, that can lead to fading of the colour. Because of this reason quartz is not recommended for outdoor use. - Heavy
Quartz is very dance and heavy; it may require additional structural support of some cabinets, like the one under the kitchen sink.
